Meet Mario DeCaro
Ethics & Global Citizenship Instructor
Leadership in a Complicated World
Mario DeCaro, Ph.D., is a distinguished philosopher at the University of Rome, Tre, and is a long-time summer Instructor in the Tufts Department of Philosophy. He was a Fulbright Fellow at Harvard University and, twice, a Visiting Scholar at MIT. He is the author of five books and numerous journal articles published in four different languages, and the editor or coeditor of seven anthologies, including Naturalism in Question (Harvard University Press). He writes regularly for several national Italian newspapers and magazines, including the cultural page of the Italian national newspaper, Il Manifesto.
Asteroid 5329 was named after him.
The creator of the Ethics & Global Citizenship program at Tufts University in 2004, DeCaro brings a unique perspective to the exploration of leadership and ethics in a complicated world. A keen observer of both American and European culture, he believes that a critical examination of complex moral issues starts with listening. His teaching style, he says, is to introduce students to multiple viewpoints, explore what they have in common, and render informed judgments on points of divergence. Philosophy helps guide his teaching, but his classes are informed by popular culture (films, music, politics, etc.)
