About Us

The Tufts Literacy Corps was established in 1997, through the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development and the Tufts Center for Reading and Language Research. According to national studies, the nation's fourth graders are reading below grade level.

With this information in mind, Tufts established a structured training program and the Tufts Literacy Corps began. Since then, the TLC has represented the University's commitment to public service by providing training and supervision to students who work with children in the Medford and Somerville schools. Through a partnership between Tufts and local public schools, the TLC's mission is to help every child in our host communities succeed in school.

A university-wide initiative to make the values and skills of active citizenship a hallmark of a Tufts University education.

The Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development

The Tufts Literacy Corps is housed within the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development. Faculty from the Child Development Department contribute to the TLC training program; the Tufts Literacy Corps library is located in Eliot-Pearson's Curriculum Laboratory.

The Center for Reading and Language Research

The TLC is affiliated with Tufts' Center for Reading and Language Research. Under the direction of Professor Maryanne Wolf, CRLR is involved in a tri-city reading intervention project that is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

TLC Tutors learn to use a variety of strategies to help children with reading and writing. Among them are the innovative methods designed at CRLR. These methods, which have grown out of Professor Wolf's research foster automatic and rapid sight word recognition.
