Title:   Foundations of Literacy (Online)

Course Number:      ED 0191AD
Room: Online

Course Description:

This class focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of literacy learning and instruction. We will discuss key theories and approaches related to literacy instruction as well as the structures, methods, strategies, and assessments that are appropriate for whole class, small group, and individual reading and writing instruction. Our time together will include lectures, readings, discussions, classroom observations, and hands-on experiences.
We will work from a strengths perspective, a stance that assumes students bring into the classroom valuable knowledge, experiences, and literacies, all of which are the foundation of further literacy learning. Such a curriculum recognizes and affirms that all students bring valuable literacy practices to schools from their homes and communities. We will also focus on teaching reading and writing in the content areas.
