Title:   Bridging Venice, 2017

Course Number:      FAMB 0101A
Campus: Abroad
Room: TBA

Course Description:

This course is for those who want to make art in one of the world's most beautiful and mysterious cities. 2017 marks the 57th year of the Venice Biennale, the prominent international contemporary art exhibition. This course will encompass an introduction to the cultural, historical and visual richness of Venice in addition to the contemporary work exhibited at the Biennale. With both guided tours and individual visits we will explore the Biennale both in the Giardini and Arsenale, and also discover the site-specific works that are installed throughout Venice. We will look at the spectrum of artists that Venice offers... from Giotto to Mark Bradford.

Mags Harries and Julie Graham are both renowned teachers at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Capitalizing on Mags' experience with sculpture, site-specific installation and mapping, and Julie's experience with mixed media, painting and photography, we will discuss a range of disciplines and conceptual art-making approaches. A guest art historian will give 2 lectures addressing the history and development of Venetian art and architecture. We will visit both the contemporary and historical museums.

This course is open to undergrads (juniors and above), grads, alums and national and international students. This will be a two-week (credit? Or no credit?) course that is appropriate for students who have an art background in art history and/or is fine art practitioner.  A minimum of 3 college level art/art history courses is required. Part of the magic of Venice is the maze of streets and canals, where around every corner are wonders of history, art, architecture, textures, color and aromas of Italian cooking. How will this exposure impact your perceptions? The first few days we will introduce you to the city through a series of exercises that will encourage you to navigate the labyrinth. Each student will maintain a daily visual journal in response to his or her experiences in Venice. We will have frequent meetings to discuss the exhibitions and to review the journals. Each day they will pose questions to the group pertaining to their interests and discoveries.

The tuition will include visits to the Biennale, housing, 2 group dinners, lectures throughout Venice, some museum entrances, and additional field trips. We will take the train to Padua to see the work of Giotto in the Scravegni Chapel and visit the islands of Burano and Torcello. Class will meet 5-6 days a week. (depending upon credit requirements).

Julie Graham
Julie Graham's art explores how we define our sense of place - how we move through and negotiate our relationship to place, and by extension, to each other. Graham's paintings, sculptures and photographs find formal beauty in unexpected places, and they also suggest the beauty of human potential to survive in ever-changing environmental, social, and material conditions. Graham teaches painting at SMFA, Boston. She exhibits her work nationally.
