Title:   Designing for Web & Print:Partnership
   w/ Blackstone Community Center

Course Number:      GRA 0007N1
Campus: Boston-Fenway
Room: TBA

Course Description:

In this immersive course and rare opportunity, students will work closely with youth enrolled in the Digital Journalism curriculum at the Blackstone Community Center (Boston, MA) to create a publication highlighting issues of mass incarceration, criminalization and violence. The Digital Journalism curriculum was developed by Rashin Fahandej as a facet of In-Sight, her Boston Air Residency project in affiliation with the Mayor's Office of Art and Culture, Boston Center for Youth and Family, MIT Open Doc Lab, Emmanuel College, and Villa Victoria Center for the Art.

The Publication Design class will highlight the goals of In-Sight: to create social and policy changes through mobilizing community members and amplifying platforms for marginalized voices.

The course will meet at both Blackstone Community Center and the Mac Lab at SMFA. All students will participate equally in the creation of a hard-copy and digital publication, from defining the target audience and itemizing project goals, to designing and producing the publication using Adobe Creative Cloud. All students will complete the course with a printed and digital deliverable, as well as documentation of their process.

Lectures and reading will investigate the communicative power of word and image, the history of
publishing, the relationship between designing for printed and analog publications, and strategies for
working with clients.
