Title:   Historical Linguistics of Ancient Greek

Course Number:      GRK 0181B
Campus: Medford/Somer.
Room: TBA

Course Description:

Ancient Greek was spoken over at least 2,000 years, from the Myceneans to the dawn of the Byzantine age. It was never a single, uniform language, but had geographic, temporal, and social variation encompassing Sappho's Aeolic, Menander's Attic, St. Paul's Koine, and many others.  We will look at the development of Greek from Proto-Inda-European down to the beginning of Medieval Greek, with particular attention to sound changes and dialect variations: you'll see why classical Attic is not "normal" Greek, and why the dialect of epic is so mixed. We'll talk about the relationships between Greek and other languages, including Latin.

Pre-requisite: one 100-level course in Greek (that is, four or more semesters of college Greek).
