Title:   Jane Austin: Novels & Films

Course Number:      ENG 0086A
Campus: Medford/Somer.
Room: TBA

Course Description:

Reading and discussion of Austen’s six published novels, and of some recent films derived from her works, including “Sense and Sensibility,” “Persuasion,” Pride and Prejudice,” and “Clueless.” We’ll ask how this most resolutely verbal of authors translates to the screen, and what our current fascination with her work tells us about ourselves. We will read Austen’s work in combination with those of her contemporaries, and look at how Austen’s novels inhabit their historical contexts, and at the ways those works may register and respond to political, literary, and gender questions. English Majors: This course has a pre-1860 designation for degree requirement purposes.
