Title:   The Childhood Canon & Disney

Course Number:      ENG 0191AC
Campus: Medford/Somer.
Room: Tisch Library 310

Course Description:

From the gender portrayals of Grimm’s Fairy Tales and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan to the class politics of P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins, close readings of the childhood classics yield some surprising results. For better or worse, from Snow White to Pocahontas, Disney has placed an indelible stamp on our collective unconscious when it comes to many of these texts. In addition to tracing how constructions of gender, race, nationality and age have altered over time in what amounts to the Disney canon, we will also look at the renewed interest in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles, sparked by Disney’s live action release of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Finally, we will explore both the accolades and the controversies connected with more recent Disney and Disney-Pixar productions such as The Princess and the Frog, Brave, and Frozen.
English Majors: This course has a post-1860 designation for degree program requirement purposes.
