Application for Admission

Applications are accepted from sophomores or juniors who are full-time students in good academic and disciplinary standing at Tufts University or any other accredited American college or university. (Only Tufts students may apply to the Oxford program.) Completed applications for the full year 2009-2010, fall 2009, AND spring 2010 programs should be submitted no later than February 2, 2009, with the exception of the Oxford program which has an application deadline of December 1, 2008.

Application packets are available in the Office of Tufts Programs Abroad on the 7th floor of Dowling Hall. Unfortunately, they are not currently available online, but students not on the Tufts campus may contact Melanie Armstrong (melanie.armstrong@tufts.edu) to be mailed a copy.  Each applicant must submit the following items:

1. A completed application for admission.

2. For non-Tufts students, one transcript for all college-level work showing a minimum of three semesters of work completed. (Not required for Tufts students; the Office of Programs Abroad will obtain a transcript on your behalf.)

3. Two letters of recommendation from members of the faculty at Tufts or the student’s home institution. For students applying to Chile, China, Japan, Madrid, Paris, or Tübingen, at least one of the letters must be from a faculty member of the appropriate language department. For Tufts in London, one recommendation must be from the department in which the student wishes to study at University College London.

4. A signed Agreement and Release Form.

5. A nonrefundable $40 application fee (check or money order only, made payable to the Trustees of Tufts College) for each application submitted.

6. A photocopy of a passport valid for the entire duration of study abroad.

For Tufts in Ghana: see additional application procedures under Tufts-in-Ghana section.

For Tufts in Oxford: see additional application procedures under Tufts-in-Oxford section.

Decisions on acceptance to Tufts Programs Abroad are normally made by March 15. Within two weeks after an applicant has been notified of an acceptance, a nonrefundable deposit of $350 must be made to guarantee a place in the program to which the student has been accepted. If a student withdraws after confirming his or her acceptance, he or she will forfeit the $350 confirmation fee. No refunds are possible in cases of withdrawal once the programs have started because commitments and contractual agreements are made in advance of the students’ arrival.

NOTE: Students on a Tufts Program Abroad do NOT need to fill out Leave of Absence or Transfer of Credit forms.

Tufts students admitted to a Tufts program are required to attend a pre-departure meeting held during reading period in the semester prior to their semester or year abroad.  Important information regarding the program, health, safety, and cultural adaptation will be discussed by Programs Abroad staff and alumni of the program.

GOOD STANDING
Students participating in Tufts Programs Abroad must be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Good standing means that the student is not on academic probation level 3 or higher or disciplinary probation level 2 or higher. See the Tufts Bulletin for an explanation of the levels of academic probation. See "Tufts University Student Disciplinary System" for an explanation of levels of disciplinary probation.

REQUIRED GPA

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) is expected for all programs except London and Oxford.  A cumulative GPA of 3.7 after two semesters is required for Oxford; for London, a cumulative GPA of 3.3 is expected with an average of 3.3 in the major, but students whose GPA in their major is a 3.3 with an overall GPA of a 3.0 may be admitted.  For Paris, a GPA of 3.0 in all French courses is required, while a GPA of 3.5 is required for consideration for Sciences-Po.

For students in the School of Engineering, a GPA of 3.3 at the time of application is required for all programs.

Financial Aid

Tufts students already receiving financial aid at Tufts may continue to receive their scholarship awards while enrolled in one of the Tufts Programs Abroad. Students must apply in advance for all scholarships, loans, or other forms of financial aid at the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Programs Abroad will assist Tufts-in-Japan participants in the application process for the JASSO scholarship. Non-Tufts students are not eligible for financial aid from Tufts University and should apply for aid or loans through their own college or university.
