Academic Program
Students normally enroll in four or five courses each
semester:
- A program course in Spanish theater coordinated with
plays, films, lectures, and exhibits currently available in Madrid, conducted
by the director of the program. This course is required of all full-year
students in the program during the fall semester and optional for the spring semester.
- An additional program course in Contemporary Spanish Civilization and
Art is offered spring semester only. It is optional for full-year students;
spring-semester students must select between this course and the
above-mentioned Theater course. Both courses are structured according
to the same pattern, which includes a cultural activities component, and
students may not take both courses because of this overlap.
- An optional program course in Advanced Spanish
language is highly recommended and offered at both the Madrid and
Alcalá program centers. Other options are available at both university
locations.
- Two or three courses to be selected by the student, with the advice of the
director, from among the course offerings of the Autonomous University of
Madrid (full-year and spring semester) or the University
of Alcalá (full-year, fall and spring semesters). Students make individual
agreements with their professors regarding exams, papers, and readings for
which they are responsible each semester and are expected to make use of the
individual tutorial help covered by the program. Fall semester Alcalá
student course selection at the University of Alcalá will be limited to
those taught by professors willing to offer them an exam in December.
All Tufts-in-Madrid students will meet with the
director each week during the academic year to handle program business and
announcements. The director will monitor students’ progress in their university
courses and convert Spanish grades into Tufts grades.
Internships can be arranged for qualified full-year
students in their second semester. In the past, these have included work in
schools, businesses, volunteer agencies, government ministries, and the media.
