Hong Kong, an affluent modern city of more than six million, offers visitors a unique blend of Eastern history and Western influence. Returned to China in July 1997 after more than 150 years as a British Crown Colony, Hong Kong continues to enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a Special Administrative Region.

The Tufts-in-Hong Kong program is affiliated with the University of Hong Kong and offered for the spring semester. HKU, as the university is known, evolved from the former Hong Kong College of Medicine, which was instituted in 1887. Since its official opening in 1912, the University has embodied the pioneering spirit of Hong Kong. It remains at the forefront of breakthroughs in medical and scientific research. HKU has a student population of around 19,900, with about 1,800 international students.

Courses are taught in English and are offered across a broad curriculum. Faculties open to Tufts-in-Hong Kong students include Arts, Education, Business and Economics, Engineering, Law, Science, and Social Sciences.

Academic Program

Students in the program are fully integrated in to the University of Hong Kong system. Their applications will be submitted to a Faculty of HKU, which will make the final admission decision. Students will be required to take at least three courses, which are equivalent to fifteen or more HKU credits, in the Faculty through which they are admitted. Courses can be selected from no more than two faculties. Final admissions from HKU will be forthcoming by as late as the end of November.

Although courses at the University of Hong Kong are taught in English, students are encouraged to take additional elective courses in Chinese language "Introduction to Cantonese" or "Introduction to Putonghua (Mandarin)" to facilitate their cultural integration. Language courses do not count toward the limit of courses from only two faculties.
