Oxford University, with 9,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students, is now over 800 years old and consists of thirty-five independent, self-contained, self-governed colleges and numerous other institutes and organizations. Tufts maintains an agreement with Pembroke College under which a select few qualified Tufts students may spend an academic year at Pembroke College, as fully integrated visiting students. Pembroke College was founded in 1624 and has a student body of 400. It is a friendly and informal college, emphasizing intellectual activity, but sports, drama, and music are also important. (Pembroke has its own boathouse and playing fields.) There are numerous clubs and societies organized by Pembroke students. AdministrationDirector: Jaki Leverson, B. Sc. Academic ProgramOxford (http://www.ox.ac.uk/) Pembroke College (http://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/) Courses at Oxford usually include eight tutorials each, but some are covered in four tutorials. Although a good deal of flexibility is possible, Humanities and Social Science majors will normally take two courses each term, usually consisting of eight tutorials each, though occasionally one course may only consist of four tutorials. Science majors will follow an equal amount of work but through a combination of tutorials and laboratory work. Although students may be required to take a final test at the end of each course of tutorials, they do not take the end-of-year final exams and assessment is based largely on tutorial coursework. Usually, tutorials are conducted by the Fellows of Pembroke and by Fellows of other colleges. Attendance for lectures at Oxford is at the student’s discretion.
