Major in Sociology
Why Major in Sociology?
- Provides majors with a strong base from which to
launch careers in the medical, legal,
administrative, or public service fields.
- Helps students discover how people create the
societies in which they live.
- Teaches data collecting methods and analytical
skills.
- Exposes students to cross-cultural perspective
on social values, rules, and law,
- Examines social constructs such as race and
gender that assign social statuses to people and
organize their daily lives.
- Focuses on how people organize in social
movements, create alternative lifestyles, and use
popular culture such as media, to confront the
status quo and change their societies.
- Entices our best students to become Sociology
professors.
If you have always wanted “to think outside the box” and
quietly dared to imagine that “things are not always
what they seem,” try sociology. Browse through the
Sociology section of the Tufts Bulletin; you are sure to find courses there
that excite your interest.
Introducing A New Option for Sociology Majors
Beginning in Fall 2006!
- Specialize in an area of interest within
Sociology
- Make connections among the courses in your major
- Study an area in depth (and perhaps develop a
related Senior Honors Thesis topic).
- Get to know other Sociology majors within your
cluster
- Build your resume for a future career within a
particular focus
Sociology Clusters
In order to assist you in choosing courses, the
Sociology faculty has developed two cluster areas. These
two reflect the current strengths of the department.
More may be offered in the future. However, the goal of
the clusters is to offer in-depth study in a few areas
rather than a wide breadth of possibilities.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS OPTION,
