Awards
Professor Sarah Sobieraj was the recipient of the "2011 Outstanding Published
Article Award" from the Peace, War, and Social Conflict Section of the ASA for
her article, "Reporting Conventions: Journalists, Activists, and the Thorny
Struggle for Political Visibility." Social Problems, 57, 4: 505-528. This
article was also highlighted in Contexts Magazine's, "Discoveries: New and
Noteworthy Social Research" section.
Assistant Professor Helen Marrow:
2011-2012 Neubauer Faculty Fellow, Tufts University.
The Fellowship is sponsored by the Neubauer Fund for
Faculty Excellence and is awarded to exceptional scholars
whose work will elevate the University's academic stature
and reputation.
Assistant Professor Helen Marrow's article
entitled "Immigrant Bureaucratic Incorporation: The Dual Roles
of Professional Missions and Government Policies" (American
Sociological Review, 2009) was recently awarded the 2011
Distinguished Contribution to Research Article Award from the Latino/a
Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.
Professor Sarah Sobieraj is the recipient
of the 2010 Undergraduate Initiative in Teaching Award (UNITE). This award
is presented to one junior faculty member from Arts, Sciences & Engineering
who demonstrates excellence in teaching and advising; concern for students'
academic and personal growth; and the ability to convey the passion and
enthusiasm for their field of study.

2011 Sociology Majors Week
Open House On March 7, 2011, the Department of
Sociology hosted its annual Majors Week Open House in
its newly renovated space. The event, chaired by
Professor John Conklin, featured student and faculty
introductions, a tour of the Department's website, and
brief presentations from former Sociology major, now
adjunct lecturer, Amanda Glynn, and former Channel 5
newscaster, now Sociology major, Jim Boyd.
