Welcome to The Department of Sociology at Tufts
We are a vibrant and supportive department with research
and teaching strengths in media, culture, and society;
social inequalities and social change; and immigration,
transnational communities, and globalization. Many of
our nine full-time faculty members approach their
research and teaching from a social justice orientation,
creating opportunities for students to get involved in
projects designed to benefit neighboring communities. In
addition to a major and a minor in Sociology, members of
the department contribute in important ways to
interdisciplinary programs in Peace and Justice Studies,
Community Health, Communications and Media Studies,
International Relations, American Studies, Asian
Studies, Women's Studies, and Urban and Environmental
Policy.
Our students learn to examine social interactions,
institutions, and identities in a systematic way. The
department's varied courses show how our selves, our
actions, and our relationships are shaped by society,
and how they in turn structure and change society.
Social class, race, and gender are of central concern,
as are institutions such as the media, the law, the
family, religion, medicine, education, the military,
business, nonprofit organizations, science, and the
arts.
Students in our courses learn theories and research
techniques that are useful for understanding social
structures and solving social problems. Critical and
comparative analysis and the imagination of alternative
visions of society are fostered. Our majors graduate
with highly developed research and critical thinking
skills that suit them well for graduate and professional
school and for careers in government, nonprofit
organizations, business, the law, communications, and
research. |
