| About S.A.L.A.A.M.
S.A.L.A.A.M. (South Asian Literary And Art Magazine), a sub-group of TASA (Tufts Association of South Asians),
was created with the purpose of promoting the growth of creative writing and the visual arts among those of South Asian descent.
This magazine offers an outlet for experimentation and learning while recognizing and showcasing the talents of a people
with connections to a subcontinent immensely rich in culture.
The first issue of S.A.L.A.A.M. was distributed on the Tufts University campus in the Spring of 2000,
and featured the works of a diverse group of students. Though created with the hope of encouraging those of the South Asian
community to openly share their creative writing and artwork, we welcome and appreciate submissions from
all students in the Boston area.
The word "salaam" often invokes certain images, such as that of the popular greeting used by those
practicing the religion of Islam, which is prominent in many regions of South Asia.
However, "salaam" is, in fact, an Arabic word simply meaning peace.
With this in mind, S.A.L.A.A.M. was envisioned in the spirit of collaboration and with the hope of
becoming a truly intercollegiate venture to be distributed throughout the Boston area.
We are proud to see SALAAM grow into a high-quality publication in which students of
all backgrounds in the Boston area can express themselves. With a foundation of South
Asian ideas from students at Tufts University, SALAAM now serves as a platform for an
inter-collegiate audience in the Boston area to present a wide spectrum of ideas
and thoughts in a single magazine.
