Thank you for your interest
in Tufts University and the Tufts Sailing Team. One of the most
selective universities in the country, Tufts has excellent academic
programs with internationally reknowned professors. The Tufts Sailing
Team competes on an international level and its goal every year
is to be number one!
The Tufts boathouse is located on Upper Mystic Lake
in West Medford, two and one half miles from campus. The fleet is comprised
of 24 Lark class dinghies, six Lasers, and two coach boats.
Larks are thirteen and one half foot, British-made
dinghies designed for adults with powerful sails,
but no trapeze or spinnaker. Larks are perfect for
lake sailing because they have tall, tapered masts
and deep, narrow centerboards to optimize upwind
performance. Our redesigned Lark fleet was purchased
in 2005. The new boats feature skiff-style drop down
rudders and carbon fiber spars. They come in eight
colors for team racing.
Sailing is a two-season sport at Tufts, with
over 90 fall regattas and nearly 60 spring regattas.
We enter as many as ten college regattas per weekend with at least
one Women's and one Freshmen event each weekend. Each host school
supplies the boats. Our location, only five miles from Boston, puts
in the center of college racing's biggest and busiest district.
Tufts greatest strength is the large number of
talented and dedicated sailors who practice nearly
every weekday afternoon. We take great pride in
our practices, filling up nearly all 24 Larks each day. The emphasis
on experimenting, improving, and having fun. We do mix in some practices
at other locations such as the Charles River and Boston Harbor.
