LGBT Violence Prevention Project

"I'm trans, and I'm afraid to get help because I think the doctors and police will treat me like a freak or even hurt me."

It's true that many transgender people have had very negative experiences with doctors, police, and other professionals, and this could happen at Tufts as well. However, Tufts has made many efforts to ensure that you are treated fairly and respectfully. Here are some options:

  1. Speak to the director of the LGBT Center. She has extensive experience with trans issues and issues of violence, and she can provide referrals to trans-friendly police officers, doctors, and counselors.
  2. Call TUPD at 617-627-3030 and ask to speak to the LGBT liasion police officer, who has been trained in both LGBT and relationship/sexual violence issues. If it is not an emergency, he can call you back and take your report.
  3. The Tufts Health Service staff has received training regarding transgender issues. If you have any concerns, ask to speak to Margaret Higham, the Medical Director.

Is this you...?

  1. "I didn't think a woman could rape, but..."
  2. "I'm trans, and I'm afraid to get help because..."
  3. "My ex keeps IM-ing me..."
  4. "In my country, you don't talk about these things."
  5. "Am I being harassed because I'm a woman or because I'm a dyke?"
  6. "I'm concerned about my HIV risk and there's no way I can talk to my partner about it."
