Requirements for Majors & Minors
Major in Italian Studies
Requirements for the Italian Studies major consist of 10 courses as follows:
- Category A: Five courses taught in Italian in the Department of Romance Languages:
- Two courses in composition & conversation:
IT 21 and 22, or equivalent
(Note: One high school acceleration credit, appearing on the
student's transcript, may be counted as equivalent to IT 21.)
- Two survey courses:
IT 31 and 32, or equivalent
(Note: An equivalent for IT 31 is an Italian literature course
dealing with texts written prior to the eighteenth century; an
equivalent for IT 32 deals with texts from the eighteenth
century or later.)
- One 100-level course, such as:
IT 121, Advanced Italian Language
IT 191, Special Topics
IT 192, Special Topics
- Category B: Two courses taught in English in the Department of Romance
Languages, such as:
- IT 51, Dante's Inferno
- IT 52, Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso
- IT 55, The Rinascimento
- IT 75, Italian Film
- Category C: Any three courses from one or more of the following groups:
- Category A, above;
- Category B, above;
- Courses in Latin language or literature, with
readings in the original, above the level of Latin 3;
- Courses in Latin literature or culture, with readings in English
translation;
- Courses devoted exclusively to Italian culture (as attested
by course description and
syllabus), taught in departments other
than Romance Languages. Such courses must be approved by the
Department of Romance Languages for credit in the major. See the
Appendix for the Italian Studies Major.
Please note: No more than one credit in Independent Study may be counted
toward the major. No more than two credits combining an
Independent Study and an honors thesis may be counted toward the
major. Courses taken in Italy may be counted toward the major,
subject to approval by the Department of Romance Languages. All
courses taken for credit in the major must be completed with a
grade of C- or better.
The Senior Year
It is highly recommended that seniors returning from overseas
programs enroll in an appropriate Italian course in the
Department of Romance Languages during their final year of
study.
Declaring the Major
Interested students should consult the
designated adviser for the major in Italian Studies.

A list of courses
exclusively devoted to Italian culture, taught in departments other than Romance Languages, which count toward the Italian Studies Major:
Please note: This list is limited to courses which appear in the printed
version of the 2001-2002 Tufts Bulletin, exclusive of Special
Topics courses. Cross-listed course designations are marked with
an asterisk. Please consult the sponsoring department to verify
whether a course is offered in a particular semester.
Other courses devoted exclusively to Italian culture may be
counted toward the Italian Studies Major upon presentation of
course description and syllabus. Courses taken in other
departments must be approved by the Department of Romance
Languages for credit in the major.
