Metcalf Hall is home to the Bridge Program!
Are you a student looking for stimulating discussion?
Are you concerned about current affairs in politics,
ethics, or education? Do you wonder what Tufts faculty
are doing on the local and national scene to effect
changes? Or, are you looking for advice about what YOU
might do to make a difference in these areas?
Now in its ninth year, Bridge continues to attracts
students who are looking for dialogue and increased
faculty interaction. Residents living in Metcalf will
have regular opportunities to engage Tufts' faculty and
each other in a casual yet intelligent atmosphere. A
rotation schedule will afford two students with the task
of assisting the two Resident Assistants in preparing
for the presentation each week.
Location: Metcalf is centrally located on
Professors Row. It is across the street from the Mayer
Campus Center and the Tisch Library.
Rooms: The average double room is 10' x 14'
with additional closet space. There are 27 doubles. The
average single room is 10' x 10' with additional closet
space. There are 22 singles. There is one sophomore
triple on the first floor which is 11' x 20'. Each room
is furnished with a set of moveable furniture per
occupant. The furniture consists of an extra long twin
bed, a desk, and a desk chair. The beds are
multi-positioned beds that have eleven height
adjustments up to 32 inches with 30 inches of space
underneath when raised to maximum height. The use of
solid cinder blocks or any other material, to raise the
multi-position beds is prohibited in Metcalf. Rooms on
the eastern side of the building are carpeted, while
those on the western side are not.
Bathrooms: One single sex bathroom is located on
the eastern and western sides of each floor of the
building. Each bathroom contains showers, toilet stalls,
and sinks.
Common Areas: The main lounge on the ground floor
is spacious with a great view of downtown Boston. There
is a television, ping-pong table, couches, tables and
chairs in this lounge. On the same level students have
access to a smaller study. Tables, chairs and study
carrels are provided. A small lounge in the east
basement also serves as a quiet study room and a lounge.
Notes: Metcalf is used for Winter Recess Housing
Facilities: The kitchen is located on the second
floor on the eastern side. It contains a full size
refrigerator/freezer, and an electric stove/oven.
Washing machines and clothes dryers are located in the
basement. Vending machines can be found in the main
lounge on the first floor. A bicycle storage rack is
located in the basement on the eastern side of the
building.
A little history: The eastern half of the
building was constructed in 1895 as a residence for the
women of then Jackson College. In 1937, well after after
Tufts College and Jackson College were fused, the
western side of the building was added. The structure's
vintage still shows through throughout the building,
despite numerous renovations.
