Housing Choices
Residence Halls:
Houston Hall
Houston Hall is one of our residence halls which
houses an all first-year option (Tilton Hall is the
other). The building was selected for its size and
allows for close interaction and social development
amongst the residents. It is also large enough to house
a representative cross-section of the class. Like
Tilton, Houston's programs and resources are tailored to
meet the particular needs of first-year students. Best
of all, a Tufts scholar lives in Houston. This
Scholar-in-Residence coordinates weekly discussions that
feature other Tufts scholars and mentors students about
their course selection, acclamation to college life and
overall well-being at Tufts University.
Houston offers:
- Social and recreational programs for all members
of the Class of 2011. Programs from previous years
include Tufts traditions like painting the cannon
and building floats for Homecoming, tie dying,
barbecues, and swing dance lessons.
- Weekly discussions and receptions that introduce
residents to various Tufts faculty and dignitaries.
- Live-in academic tutors who offer individual
tutoring, review sessions, tips on time management
and help with study skills.
Location - Houston Hall is located uphill on
the Residential Quadrangle, between Cabot Intercultural
Center and Carmichael Hall. The quad is a favorite for
Frisbee and ball games as well as warm-weather studying
and socializing. Its proximity to academic buildings as
well as the social atmosphere of the quad, is popular.
Houston is near Carmichael Dining Hall, and next to a
student parking lot. Houston Hall is a staffed residence
hall, with one Resident Proctor and eight Resident
Assistants. A Scholar-in-Residence and tutors will also
live in Houston Hall.
Rooms - The average double room is 13' x 15'.
There are 126 doubles. There are no singles in Houston.
Houston also has one four-person apartment located on
the first floor; it has a common room, two double
bedrooms, a kitchen, and bath. Each room has built-in
furniture which includes drawers, closets, overhead
storage shelves, a counter, and a small mirror. The
desk, desk chair, and extra long twin bed are fully
moveable. The beds are all multi-positioned beds that
have eleven height adjustments up to 32 inches with 30
inches of space underneath when raised to a maximum
height. The use of solid cinder blocks or any other
material, to raise the multi-position beds is prohibited
in Houston. The floors are linoleum tiled. Houston Hall
is co-ed by room.
Bathrooms - There are four single-sex bathrooms
on each floor of the dorm. Each bathroom has two showers
and three toilet stalls, as well as a counter and sinks.
Common Areas - There is one main lounge in the
basement of Houston. It is furnished with several
couches, table tennis, air hockey, and a television.
This lounge, as well as the hallways in the building,
are carpeted.
Facilities - A small kitchen is located in the
basement, and is equipped with a stove, sink and
refrigerator. Washing machines and clothes dryers are
also found in the basement, as are several vending
machines. There are a few vending machines on the first
floor as well. Houston has an indoor bicycle storage
room.
