Tufts Republicans Protest Outrageous Events

For Immediate Release Just
last Wednesday, the Tufts University Campus Center was taken over by
students, administrators, and faculty taste-testing lubricants, taking
part in the “Condom Olympics,” and marking on life-sized fully-nude
drawings where they like to be rubbed, touched, kissed, or licked. Photos
from the fair, available online at On
Thursday, an owner of a sex novelty store will be presenting about the
"joys of toys" and "everything you've ever wanted to know
about sex" at a freshman dorm, sponsored by the Office of Residential
Life and Learning. And on
Friday, the university is sponsoring another sexually explicit "sex
fair," Vulvapalooza, a "free event celebrating vaginas." “The
gratuitousness of these events is incredible” said Tufts Republicans
President Philipp Tsipman, “The university is sending a clear message
that anything goes here. Tolerance
is in and decency is nowhere to be found.”
In contrast to its recent actions, last year the university
administration was swift to respond to the word “gay” written on a
washing machine as an objectionable incident of “bias.” “The
University should not be promoting such a degraded view of sexuality.
Instead, Tufts should be promoting the truly healthy conceptions of
love and relationships,” said Rachel Hoff, Tufts Republicans Women’s
Caucus Chair. As part of a
nationwide movement to “take back the date,” coordinated by the
Independent Women’s Forum, the Republicans are asking their fellow
students to reconsider the “hook-up” culture on the Tufts campus.
“What we’re asking is, ‘Don’t you think you deserve
something better?’” said Tsipman. The
February 11th “Sex on the Hill” fair was organized by the
student organization Tufts VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood with the
participation of the Tufts Health Service.
The Tufts Women’s Center is sponsoring the “sex fair,”
Vulvapalooza, as well as performances of The Vagina Monologues, on Friday, February 20th and
Saturday, February 21st. The
