Research Overview

Stereotype Threat

At times, the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about one's group can lead to impaired performance in stereotype relevant domains. This phenomenon is one of many factors contributing to the underperformance of African Americans and women in standardized testing contexts.

The Tufts University Social Cognition Lab has recently began to explore this topic and the implications of stereotype threat for self-esteem, psychological disidentification, and eventual disengagement from threatening domains.
