The Premed Society is primarily an event based organization.  Please take a look at some our our most popular programs and if you have ideas for an event or would like to get involved in planning one, email us at TuftsPremedical@gmail.com.  Remember this is not an exhaustive or final list so check your email for upcoming events!

Lecture Series:
For the society's monthly meetings we try to invite an exciting and diverse group of guest speakers to give students insight into the different paths to becoming a doctor and the choices they make.  Speakers have include doctors, admissions officers, career service advisors, clergy, and current medical students and topics have included Healthcare for the Homeless, The Future of Diagnostic Medicine and Jewish Medical Ethics.  We will post the speakers as soon as schedules are finalized or if you have an idea for a lecture(r), let us know!

Mentorship Program:
The Mentorship Program is a great way to get personal and informal advice or to help out other Premed Jumbos.  The program matches upperclassmen with Freshmen and Sophomores with similar majors or interests and brings them together to discuss classes, summer plans, or anything that either one wants to talk about.  While this isn't supposed to replace advice from Carol Baffi-Dugan or Shirley Smith, it's one more face to talk to and connects students with upperclassmen and other underclassmen to pool their experiences and get free lunch and maybe watch some Scrubs or House.  Applications generally go out in the beginning of Fall but email TPMSMentorship@gmail.com if you'd like to be a student mentor or see if you can get a mentor.

The Sharewood Project:
The Sharewood Project is an incredible and unique opportunity where undergraduates get hands on experience interacting with patients in a medical setting.  Every Tuesday a group of pre-med students help out at the free healthcare organization in Malden, MA and help take vitals and histories from patients coming to get free healthcare.  The clinic is mostly run by Tufts Medical School students but there is an Undergraduate Board under the Premed Society which organizes training sessions, volunteer schedules, and other public health projects.  To learn more or to find out how to volunteer email Tuftspremed@gmail.com.

An Evening in the OR:
Usually about one night a semester the Premed Society will reserve a large lecture hall and watch videos of partial or full surgeries narrated by by the doctors and surgeons as they perform the operations.  In the past we have watched an awake craniotomy tumor removal and a pediatric spinal realignment.  For those of you who still have an appetite, we also bring lots of popcorn, chips, and soda.

AMSA Conference:
Depending on resources and interest, the Premed Society send a group  of students each year to the regional conference of the American Medical Student Association.  The city and topic change each year, but there's always great speakers and great opportunities to meet other premeds, medical students, doctors, and maybe get a tour of a medical school.  Generally students only have to pay for travel, hotels, and meals not included in the conference ticket.  We'll send out information when we learn about the next convention.  If you're interested in going, or possibly driving, email TuftsPremedical@gmail.com and look at the AMSA page of this site to learn more about being a part of the organization.

Tour of TUSM:
Getting a tour of a top medical school is a great learning experience and one that most people don't get.  If possible, we try to arrange for a group of 10-15 students to visit the school and possibly even meet with an admissions officer or first year students.  We'll send out an email when any tour is arranged.

Kids Day Teddy Bear Hospital:
Each spring the Leonard Carmichael Society brings hundreds of kids from Medford, Somerville, and Chinatown to Tufts for a day of rides, games, and activities.  Along with other campus groups, the Premed Society has an activities booth for the kids to play at.  In the past we have made a "teddy bear hospital" where kids can play doctor and put band-aids on "teddy bear boo-boos" and even listen to their heart with a stethoscope (we squeeze the bear to make it beat).  It's a wonderful event and we're always looking for volunteers so we'll let you know when Kids Day is and how you can help!

PE 131 Emergency Care:
If you've ever thought about working on an ambulance, or learning lifesaving skills, with PE 131 you can train to be a licensed Massachusetts EMT-B and get Tufts credit for it too!  Sponsored by Tufts EMS (TEMS), the classes are taught at Tufts and include a lot of hands-on training to prepare you for the state exam and for real life.  To learn more about the class or TEMS check out http://publicsafety.tufts.edu/ems/?pid=5.
