Illness Policy

Student Illness Medical Documentation Policy

Tufts' Health Service provides "Medical Notes" to excuse an absence in only limited circumstances. Students who are too ill to take an in-class mid-term or final exam will be offered medical documentation. They must be seen at Health Service prior to the exam and must notify their professor prior to the exam. All other academic responsibilities that cannot be met due to medical illness should be communicated directly between student and professor using the online "Illness Notification Form" that is available in WebCenter for Students. Illness Notification Forms should be used for missed classes, labs, or seminars, missed quizzes and oral presentations, and late papers or take-home exams that need to be delayed. Faculty members have different class attendance policies, and the use of the online notification system does not negate these policies. We ask that you do all that you can to accommodate students who are ill. If you are concerned that one of your students is reporting excessive absences using the Illness Notification system, consult the student's academic dean.
