May 2009 Student Award Recognitions:
Mie Inouye and Kevin Lownds, both seniors, received the
James Vance Elliot Award. The James Vance Elliot Political Science
Prize is awarded in the senior year to students majoring in
Political Science whose achievements best combine academic
excellence with active participation and effective leadership in
campus and civic affairs.
Johnpaul Makilya ('10) a junior and African Studies major has
been awarded the Anne E. Borghesani Memorial Prize. Johnpaul will be
conducting research in in Senegal on "The Politics of Liberation:
Slavery, Servitude, and Citizenship and Post-Colonial Africa." This
incentive award enables the recipient to undertake a research
project, an internship, a volunteer activity, or a plan of study in
any field involving international issues. Designed to foster the
spirit of the award, the prize encourages personal growth and
independence, while increasing one's understanding of all peoples
and encouraging a commitment to the world community.
Matthew Shea, who graduated the winter 2009, has been awarded
the Ellen C. Myers Memorial Prize. The Ellen C. Myers Memorial Prize
is awarded to a junior or senior who has shown character, diligence,
and perseverance in achieving high scholarship standards in the face
of adverse circumstances while working towards a bachelor's degree
at Tufts University.
Alexandra Taylor, a senior and International Relations major
is the recipient of The Belfer Award in Political Science. This
award is given annually for an outstanding piece of written work
done in a political science course or independently by a Political
Science major.
Ross Thuotte ('10), a junior and International Relations
major has been names Summer Scholar. Ross's research will be in
Senegal on "EcoBank, a West African National Bank: Impacts and
Effects on Banking in Senegal." The Tufts Summer Scholars Program is
administered by the Office of Undergraduates Education and is a
University-wide initiative that offers research apprenticeships with
faculty/clinical mentors to motivated Tufts undergraduates. The
program offers students an opportunity to be on the front line of
discovery and scholarship at Tufts today.
