Biography

Alan Solomont's impressive and varied background has led him through many different careers. After graduating from Tufts University he became a nurse but was fired from a job at a nursing home because he tried to organize the work force. Soon he was in the nursing home business himself and eventually became the CEO of a large chain of facilities. Solomont has also been an active entrepreneur, starting various businesses of his own while helping others get new companies off the ground. Another side of Solomont is his deep commitment to public service. He's a prominent philanthropist in the Boston area and has a long and abiding passion for politics. He's raised money over the years for various Democratic Party candidates, including President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. His seminars on American politics at Tufts are distinctive for the parade of prominent Washington and Massachusetts politicians who come to lead individual sessions of the class. Solomont's many accomplishments were recognized by President Obama who nominated him to be the United States Ambassador to Spain.
