Members of the Department are actively engaged in research. Our faculty have authored books with the Brookings Institution Press, Cambridge University Press, Century Foundation Press, Cornell University Press, Harvard University Press, M.I.T. Press, Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, Yale University Press, Tufts University Press, Northern Illinois University Press, and Pennsylvania State University Press.

Awards and Prizes for Scholarship

David Art: The European Politics and Society section of the American Political Science Association selected David Art (with Ben Ansell) to receive the 2011 Best Paper Award for Membership Matters: Radical Right Party Composition in Comparative Perspective.

Jeffrey Berry: The Political Organizations and Parties of APSA selected Professor Jeffrey Berry for the 2008 Samuel J. Eldersveld Career Achievement Award.

Berry won the Leon D. Epstein Outstanding Book Award, given annually in the field of parties and political organization for his book A Voice for Nonprofits (Brookings Institution, 2003).

Berry's next two books were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to the discipline: The New Liberalism: The Rising Power of Citizen Groups (Brookings Institution, 1999) received the Aaron Wildavsky Award, given annually by the Policy Studies Organization for the best book in the field of public policy.

Jeffrey Berry and Kent Portney received the Gladys Kammerer Award for the Best Book in American Politics and the Award for Best Book in Urban Politics for their work The Rebirth of Urban Democracy (Brookings Institution, 1993).

Consuelo Cruz was awarded the Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2006 for her book Political Culture and Institutional Development in Costa Rica.

Robert Devigne received the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award, in 2000, for distinguished teaching and advising.

In 2009, the Tufts University Class of 2009 voted for Devigne to deliver the 2009 Last Lecture. The Tufts University version of the Last Lecture, inspired by the late Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, was sponsored by the Tufts Senior Class Council. Devigne was asked to reflect on his life's journey and share his reflections with the Tufts Community.

In 1996, Devigne received the Undergraduate Initiative in Teaching Award (UNITE).

Richard Eichenberg: The Foreign Policy Section of the American Political Science Association selected Richard Eichenberg to receive the Best Paper Award for Gender Difference and the Use of Force in the United States, 1990-2002, delivered on a section-sponsored panel at the 2002 Annual Meetings for the APSA.

Ioannis Evrigenis received the 2009 Delba Winthrop Award for Excellence in Political Science for his book Fear of Enemies & Collective Action (Cambridge University Press, 2008).

James Glaser received the V.O. Key Award for Best Book in Southern Politics published in 2005. Given by the Southern Political Science Association for The Hand of the Past in Contemporary Southern Politics (Yale University Press, 2005).

The Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Section of the American Political Science Association selected Professor Glaser to receive the Best Paper Award for White Voters, Black Schools: Structuring Racial Choices with a Checklist Ballot, delivered at the 2000 American Political Science Association Annual Meeting for the APSA.

Kelly Greenhill has been awarded the International Studies Association (ISA) Best Book Award for 2011 for her single-authored book Weapons of Mass Migration: Forced Displacement, Coercion, and Foreign Policy. ISA sponsors several book awards for authors in the field of international studies and encourages, supports and recognizes outstanding scholarship. The award will be conferred at the 2012 ISA Annual Convention in San Diego in April 2012.

Natalie Masuoka received the Best Paper Award in 2008 from the American Political Science Association, Asian Pacific Caucus.

Malik Mufti received the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award, in 2003, for distinguished teaching and advising.

Kent Portney and Jeffrey Berry received the Gladys Kammerer Award for the Best Book in American Politics and the Award for Best Book in Urban Politics for their work The Rebirth of Urban Democracy (Brookings 1993).

Dennis Rasmussen received the 2008, Honorable Mention, Delba Winthrop Award for Excellence in Political Science for his book The Problems and Promise of Commercial Society: Adam Smith's Response to Rousseau (University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2008).

Pearl Robinson: In 2008 Robinson received special recognition at the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, in her role as President of the African Studies Association, as one of four African-American female political scientists who attained simultaneous leadership of national learned societies in the fields of political science and in the comparative study of continental Africa.

Deborah Schildkraut: The Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Section of the American Political Science Association selected Deborah Schildkraut to receive the Best Paper Award for Immigrant Resentment: When the Work Ethic Backfires, delivered on a section-sponsored panel at the 2008 Annual Meetings for the APSA.

Tony Smith: In 2003, Tony Smith received the Tufts Distinguished Scholarship Award, which recognized his two books on American foreign policy: Foreign Attachments: The Power of Ethnic Groups in Making American Foreign Policy (Harvard University Press, 2000) and America's Mission: The United States and the Worldwide Struggle for Democracy in the Twentieth Century (Princeton University Press, 1994).

Vickie Sullivan received the Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College and the Carleton Alumni Association in 2008.

Jeffrey Taliaferro received the 2005 Robert Jarvis and Paul W. Schroeder Award for the Best Book in International History and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association, for his book Balancing Risks: Great Power Intervention in the Periphery (Cornell University Press, 2004).
