Research and Publications: Climate Action Library

The "Our Green Cities" Climate Action Plan and Green House Gas Inventory Library

As part of any city's efforts to try to become more sustainable, Climate Action represents an important set of policies and programs. This library contains the Climate Action reports from the 55 largest and a few other large U.S. cities. Our hope is that making these reports available through one central resource will facilitate analysis and comparisons across cities. Our plan is to add to and update this library as cities release new materials.

Most cities have a single report that includes its most recent Climate Action Plan and its Green House Gas Inventory. Typically the former provides a comprehensive overview of all the programs, policies, and activities of the municipal government and other governmental entities that seek to reduce carbon emissions and equivalents. The latter presents the city's estimates of what its annual emissions are and how they compare to some baseline year (usually 1999), using one of the established GHG inventory protocols. They also show how much progress has been made to reduce or "mitigate" those emissions. Some reports also include city efforts at "climate adaptation" – ways the city plans to respond to the predicted effects of rising temperatures. A few cities' climate action plans are only available as part of a broader comprehensive city plan or sustainability plan. We could not locate climate action plans of any sort for five cities, as noted below.

To use this library, simply click on the city of interest. If only one city report is available, it will open. If more than one report is available, you will see a list of your choices. Clicking on the choice will open that report.
