Tom Birmingham
Tom Birmingham, the immediate past President of the Massachusetts State Senate, grew up in Chelsea and went on to Harvard, a Rhodes Scholarship, and Harvard Law School. He became a state senator—his first elected office—in 1991. In his first term, Senator Birmingham was the Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Education. In his second term, he was appointed to chair the Senate Committee on Way and Means. Midway through his third term, he was elected President of the Senate. Tom Birmingham became a Senior Fellow at Tufts University College of Citizenship and Public Service in the spring semester of 2003. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Boston Plan for Excellence and Preservation Mass, the leading historic preservation organization in the State. He is Senior Counsel with the Boston law firm of Palmer & Dodge LLP.
