SPECIAL COURSES: Independent Study
Physical Education 110: Historical and Marketing Strategies in Tufts Athletics
Spring 2006

Course of Study (1.0 Credit)
Students will select a course of study from one the following topics:
  1. Historical Studies - Student will select a sport and/or a component of Tufts Athletics to research and document. Proposals accepted from 2-3 students only.
  2. Marketing Strategies - Student will conduct research and follow through on marketing strategies for Tufts Athletics. The main focus of this independent study will be to improve school spirit, attendance at athletic contests, improved visibility of athletics at Tufts and to the general community. (2-3 students only)
Practicum
Students will be expected to work a minimum of 4 hours per week in the offices with Tina McDevett or Branwen Smith-King. Sports marketing students will be expected to attend athletic events while promoting Tufts Athletics. Practicum expectations will include: promotions on campus, phone calls, assigned readings, internet research, off campus visits to other colleges and professional sports teams.

Research Assignment
Each student is required to complete a research paper, handbook, and/or assignment/presentation in their chosen area of study.

Assigned Readings/Visitations
Selected readings (3) from current research methodologies in the history and marketing of sports will be required. Students will be required to complete a two page reaction paper for each reading.

DATES/DEADLINES
  1. January 31st: 1 page outline of intended research assignment
  2. March 10th 1st Draft due for review (optional)
  3. April 7th Final research assignment is due (no exceptions!)
