Undergraduate Programs

Study Abroad: Tufts in London Program

The Tufts in London Program offers Tufts undergraduates a unique opportunity for a year's study at Britain's prestigious University College London (UCL). Proud as we are of our own courses, the Department faculty strongly encourage our sophomore majors to consider this opportunity. The Philosophy Department usually sponsors one or two of our department majors participating in the program. Sponsorship leads to a special transcript notation and provides a small stipend to be used towards the purchase of books.

Twice a week throughout the academic year, general information meetings are conducted on the Tufts University campus for all students interested in studying abroad. These meetings will be announced on TuftsLife.com and the “Calendar of Events” at Tufts Programs Abroad. It is required for students to attend one of these meetings before studying abroad.  Attending one of these meetings is mandatory for students who wish to study abroad.

Application to the Tufts-in-London program must be made through the Programs Abroad Office, but Philosophy students should also notify the Philosophy Department office staff in order to be considered for sponsorship. In deciding which students to sponsor, the Department will consider both how participation in the program will contribute to a student's intellectual development and the student's academic and intellectual achievement at Tufts.

Tufts in London is a full one-year program. Applicants are normally expected to have a cumulative minimum grade point average of 3.3 with at least average of 3.3 in the major. Students with GPAs of 3.0, but whose grade points in their majors alone average 3.3, may be admitted. Students applying to the UCL Philosophy Department must have taken courses in Philosophy at Tufts.

Philosophy majors who entered Tufts before Fall 2010 should bear in mind that at least four of their required courses must be Philosophy courses taken on the Medford campus. Majors who entered Tufts as of Fall 2010 or later must take at least seven of their required Philosophy courses on the Medford campus.

For general information about the program, please see the Tufts in London webpage.
