Gareth B. Matthews is Professor of Philosophy (emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He taught previously at the Universities of Virginia and Minnesota. He is the author of many articles several books on ancient, medieval, and early modern philosophy, including Socratic Perplexity and the Nature of Philosophy (Oxford, 1999) and Augustine (Blackwell, 2005). He is also the author many articles and several books on philosophy and childhood, including The Philosophy of Childhood (Harvard, 1994).
