About Us

PANGEA at Tufts is a year-old organization composed of two separate national organizations with similar missions: Why Me? and SPARKS.

Why Me? was organized two years ago at a Florida high school by a student who, after travelling through some of the most devastated areas of the world, posed the question, "why do we happen to be the ones to live in a land of opportunity, where things such as food, shelter and education are almost a guarantee, while those born in other parts of the world must struggle without these basic necessities?" The organization spread to four other Florida high schools before being brought to the college level at Tufts.

SPARKS was founded in Vancouver in 1994 by elementary school students as a system of coordinating student involvement in public service. The acronym SPARKS stands for Students Providing Aid, Relief and Kind Services. Following its success, it was taken to the college level at Princeton University and now at Tufts.

Due to the similar missions of the organizations and the belief that together we can work better, the organizations have merged at Tufts to form PANGEA.

Our Mission

PANGEA's mission is to increase awareness of global issues, take action to aid international communities, and produce informed Tufts alumnae who will use their experiences to lead our generation in creating a more just world. Therefore, our goals are to:

  • Create a community of students who are motivated to self-educate by examinig diverse international issues through weekly meetings, teach-ins, hosting events, and other mediums deemed appropriate by PANGEA's members.
  • Use our knowledge to determine effective means by which to aid specific international communities in need.
  • Take action, through various projects, including international service trips, for members of the Tufts community.

For more information about PANGEA or how to get involved, come to one of our meetings (TO BE ANNOUNCED for FALL 2007) or contact Michael Eddy or Phoenix Tso.
