A Typical House in Medford/Somerville
Tufts University's Medford/Somerville campus is located within the borders
of both Medford and Somerville. While most off-campus residents enrolled
in the Medford/Somerville Campus live in
either Medford or the sections of Somerville closest to Tufts, some students
do find accommodations in the nearby communities. Areas may include,
Malden, Cambridge, Arlington, Jamaica Plain, etc. The rents vary in
cost in those areas, from those of Somerville and Medford. However,
they are accessible if enrolled in the Boston Campus schools. Bus service is available to Tufts
from these surrounding communities, and the Davis T-stop in Somerville
is approximately a ten minute walk from Tufts.
While apartment buildings do exist in this area, most Medford and Somerville
residences are one, two, or three-family homes. Most apartments in the
area are in three-family houses and are privately owned. Each floor typically
comprises its own separate apartment with a private entrance, generally
a living room/dining room area in the front of the apartment, a kitchen
in the back, and bathroom(s) and bedroom(s) along the side. Multiple bedroom
apartments and rooms (at times furnished) are the most common listings. Studios
and one-bedrooms exist, but are in short supply.
An average rental cost comparison can be found under the category "How
Much Will It Cost" on our website. These figures are compiled from
the listed prices on our website. These are asking prices only.
The actual prices may be less if negotiations occur between tenant and

Rooms in exchange for services are also available. If you're interested
in this option, see our Work in exchange for room and board
section under Listings. You should determine exactly what services (babysitting,
tutoring, cleaning, etc.) are requested, how much of a time commitment
it entails, and if your accommodations are private.
