ALERT: The Off-Campus Housing Website is
not a secured site. It is not password protected. Here are some tips to avoid scams and spam:
**MAKE SURE THIS DOES
NOT HAPPEN TO YOU AS AN OWNER OR TENANT
Don't get SCAMMED, learn
more: Be aware that this site is
not password protected. If you sense a problem with a respondent, check
out the scam alerts. You can find information about scam alerts at
this
website. To get
free information on consumer
issues, visit the Federal Trade Commission website or call
toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP
(1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. Be aware of
PHISHING scams:
Phishing is an attempt to gain access to personal data by
deceptively and illegally soliciting information, including passwords,
user names, and financial information from those believing they are
sending it to a legitimate organization. Some phishing schemes may look
genuine, but are not. If you believe you may have been the victim of
a phishing scheme or other Internet crime, report it to the Internet Crime
Compliant Center at
http://www.ic3.gov
and immediately reset any passwords which may have been compromised.
AVOIDING SCAMS
- NEVER return money without making
sure the prospective tenant’s check clears first. Information about
check overpayment scams:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/overpayalrt.shtm
-
Ask for some form of verification –
for example, a reference from a faculty or staff member at Tufts
University. Contact that Tufts University representative directly.
-
For more information on scams, view
website:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/consumer.shtm or call toll-free,
1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.
AVOIDING SPAM
-
If you post your email address as
your contact information, mask your email to deter spambots. For
example, “ochattufts.edu” or "och@tuftsdotedu" as opposed to "och@tufts.edu". Include this as part of the listing you are
sending to us.
-
When listing with us, use a separate
email address for things like spam, mailing lists, etc. If you don’t
already have a separate email address, create one to use for public
posting.
Notice of Non-Discrimination
in Housing: Tufts University supports Massachusetts law, which states, in
general, that discrimination is prohibited on the basis of race, religion,
national origin, age, ancestry, military background or service, sex, sexual
preference, marital status, blindness, deafness, or the need of a guide dog.
(M. G. L. c.151B §4) No landlord can refuse to rent an apartment to you because
you receive a rental subsidy, because the apartment contains lead, or, with
some exceptions, because you have children.
To Post A Listing
(Landlord is reminded that Massachusetts
law requires that the landlord provide an apartment that meets the state and
local safety and health codes)
Please note that we only accept listings from property owners looking to
rent a unit not sell a unit. We DO NOT accept listings from realtors/brokers. If you are a realtor
and would like to be listed separately with our office, please email us.
There
are three methods for submitting a listing:
Email, Fax, and Mail
The quickest method is for the owner to email
an advertisement to our office at
och@tufts.edu. We do
not open attachments. See the instructions below for what to email us.
The listing should be in paragraph form (not all capitalized)
including the following information:
- on the subject line of
your email or fax, indicate the category & city of your listing
- choose only one category only -
click
here for a list of categories.
-

is located; also general location within that community.
- the street name (we do not list house numbers) and/or cross streets
-
number of bedrooms available
-
floor on which the apartment
is located
-

house, eight unit apartment building, etc)

- monthly rent per person or per apartment
(please specify)
-
utilities--specify whether they are
included
or not in the rent, and which ones
-
deposit--what is the required security deposit;
are first and last months' rent required?
-
dates of availability
-
contact information (name
and phone number or email address)--this information must appear in the body of the text.
- DO
NOT include photos or links to photos. They will be removed from
your listing.
- Please limit personal information when posting
roommates wanted ads to two sentences.
View sample listings below.
The second method is a faxed form, which may be requested
by calling 617-627-5319. Complete the fax form and return it to our office via fax to 617-627-5305.
The third method is for the property owner/manager to supply
a mailing address. We will mail a copy of the fax form to you for
completion. Once we have received the completed form, we will post
the information on the website. You may also visit our office and
complete the form.
