Justin Binder
Department of
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Justin Binder is an undergraduate student in the Civil and
Environmental Department at Tufts University. His research is
focused on the composition and mechanical analysis of deformable
magneto-sensitive materials. Such materials are created by mixing
magnetically responsive particles, such as iron, with a base material
that undergoes large deformations under an applied load. The
deformations of the resulting mixture are controllable with an
applied magnetic field. Depending on the base material, these
materials can be used as an interface between electronic and mechanical
systems, micro-pumps, or for biomedical applications. Magneto-sensitive
materials studied include silicon rubber and electro-spun silk tubes.
