Applications for admission and financial aid for domestic candidates should be submitted no later than February 1 for September enrollment and October 15 for January enrollment. Dates for international applicants are January 1 and October 15.  Applicants should have completed the requirements of a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field before enrollment into the program. Foreign students must submit their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores. General Graduate Record Examinations (GREs) are recommended but not required. Application forms for admission and financial aid can be obtained from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences web site (http://ase.tufts.edu/gradstudy/admissions.htm) or by contacting the graduate school:

The department awards teaching assistantships and research assistantships to full-time MS and PhD students on a competitive basis.  Typically a teaching assistant (TA) is responsible for two courses per semester and receives a stipend in addition to a full-tuition scholarship. TA’s are appointed during the admissions process; there is no separate application.  Research Assistants (RA’s) are chosen by individual faculty members to work on specific research grants for a stipend and a tuition scholarship. In addition to teaching and research assistantships, the department may also award partial tuition scholarships to outstanding students. Tuition scholarships cannot be applied to charges associated with undergraduate-level courses that might be required for students who require additional background in mechanical engineering.

Candidates are admitted to the M. Eng. program on the same basis as that of the M.S. program, that is, a strong academic background in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline. Candidates admitted to the M.Eng. program may transfer to the M.S. program at any time. However, transfer from the M.S. program to the M.Eng. program is not permitted. The tuition for the program is the same as that for the M.S. program - one full-year's tuition plus continuation fees, if applicable. The Department does not grant financial aid (tuition scholarships or teaching assistantships) to students in the M.Eng. program.

There are various other employment opportunities available at the university and in the surrounding community.  For more information, visit the Student Employment in Dowling Hall.
