Graduate Study

The Tufts Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an M.S in Mechanical Engineering and Human Factors Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.  We also offer a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree that is especially well suited for part-time, practicing engineers.

Students may enroll full-time or part-time in any program but tuition scholarships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships are only available on a competitive basis to full-time M.S. and Ph.D. candidates

Upon matriculation, graduate students are assigned a faculty advisor.  The advisor provides advice about registration for courses and is assigned by the Graduate Committee. As the student progresses, suitable thesis or project topics are discussed between the student and department faculty members. The selection of a thesis (M.S., Ph.D.) or project (M.Eng.) advisor should be completed by the end of the second term of full-time study. This advisor then assumes all advising duties for the student. After selecting a thesis topic and an advisor, students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs must register for thesis credit and submit a thesis prospectus describing the proposed project. Students pursuing the M.Eng. degree must register for project credit during the final semester of their degree program.

The interaction between the graduate student and a faculty member is one of the most significant aspects of a graduate student’s time at Tufts. M.S. and Ph.D. students also have a thesis committee that works with the thesis advisor to ensure success. Ph.D. students first complete a qualification process, involving a combination of courses and examinations, prior to initiating their research. All candidates for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees must defend their thesis in an oral examination open to the community.  M. Eng. candidates must make an oral presentation of their project work upon its completion that is similarly open to the community.

All Mechanical Engineering graduate students should also obtain a copy of the current Graduate Student Handbook under the Student Service link in the Graduate Studies website (http://gradstudy.tufts.edu/) and the University Bulletin (http://ase.tufts.edu/bulletin) for general University requirements and deadlines.  In addition, a course offerings booklet is published by the department each semester and is available at (http://ase.tufts.edu/mechanical/courses/main.asp.  All graduate students receive an email account and shared mailbox space.

Students are responsible for checking their mailbox and email regularly, as well as the Department website (http://ase.tufts.edu/mechanical), to remain up-to-date on department and university matters, and for informing the department of any changes of local address or phone number.
