Professor Abedian received his Ph.D. from the Mechanical Engineering Department of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979.  He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tehran University of Technology in Iran in 1975 and has a M.Sc. in mechanical engineering from MIT.  Dr. Abedian joined the Tufts faculty in 1980 as an assistant professor and promoted to an associate professor in 1987.  At Tufts, Dr. Abedian served as the acting chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1988 and became the department chairman in 1989.  He returned to full teaching duties in 1993.  Dr. Abedian has had visiting faculty appointments at the Mechanical Engineering Department of MIT in 1980 and the School of Applied Sciences of Harvard University in 1985.  Professor Abedian is a member of American Physical Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has had memberships in the Adhesion Society, the Materials Research Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Dr. Abedian principal area of interest in research and teaching is fluid mechanics. At Tufts, he teaches introductory and advanced courses in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and energy systems. In his research, he has worked on electrokinetics in fluids, piezoelectric micorpumps, flow in electromagnetcially levitated drops and ultrasonic flow measurements. Professor Abedian is also interested in polymers and copolymers, dental materials and adhesion phenomenon. Dr. Abedian has been on the advisory and scientific board of Boston-area corporations and served as scientific advisor and consultant to a number of national and international corporations. He is a holder of several patents and inventions.
