Human Factors and Surgical Skills Research Lab - HFSSRL

The T-NEMC HFSSRL conducts research in surgery in order to further the design and development of enabling technology for surgical training and performance. Our goal is to enhance the OR and other therapeutic environments for physicians and other healthcare providers. Our approach to analysis and design is the human-centred systems approach, addressing both the cognitive and motor components of performance. This research has significant potential impact on patient outcome and healthcare delivery in the medical industry.

Core competencies and resources:
  • Ergonomics/ Human Factors Analysis

  • Performance Evaluation

  • Usability Analysis

  • Bench Testing

  • Technology Assessment

  • User Training/ Learning Aids

Research areas include:

  • Visual displays in the OR --- Design of displays to aid in decision making and augment haptic feedback during laparoscopic procedures

  • Surgical skills --- Study of virtual and physical surgical simulators and surrogates and their role in training for minimally invasive procedures

  • Technology assessment --- Examining the human considerations needed for incorporating technology safely and successfully
