Nonrecurring events

1. The Somerville Mathematics Fund (SMF) is looking for volunteers from the undergraduate math community to help with the following:

--The Scrapheap Showdown will be held in the Cage in Cousens Gym a week from Sunday, on Oct. 25. It is a competition is open to any high school student who lives in Somerville.

--Math Nights will be held in various schools in Somerville during the spring, starting in March 2010.

 

Background: the Somerville Mathematics Fund was chartered in September 2000 as an affiliate of Dollars for Scholars. It is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3).  Its mission is to celebrate and encourage mathematics achievement in Somerville.  It offers renewable mathematics scholarships to outstanding mathematics students and mathematics teacher grants, runs family math nights the Scrapheap Showdown for high school students.  

 

There are presently two graduates of the Tufts Graduate Math program on the Board of the SMF. Prof. Nitecki also serves on the Board of the SMF. If you are interested and have any questions about the SMF, please contact Prof. Nitecki, or send us an email and we’ll forward it to him.

Recurring events

If you’re interested in any of the recurring events below, please contact us and let us know which ones you’re interested in.

1. GRE Problem sessions (Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:15pm-8:15om, BP 01)

Work on GRE Math subject test problems with other students.

2. Putnam Problem sessions (Thursdays 3pm, BP 06 ).

The Math Society will be holding student-run problem sessions to help interested students get their feet wet. We’ll be taking problems from past years (back when the Putnam was easier!).

3. Research support group (Time and location TBA)

If you’d like to:

·        get feedback on the research work you’ve done,

·        to bounce ideas off other students,

·        get help with TeX, or

·        find out more about what it means to ‘do research’ in math, and how to get started,

this is the event for you!
