Why did you join the College Advising Corps?
The position was brought to my attention by last year’s adviser
at Drury High School. I jumped at the opportunity to work in
education after working one year in China as an English teacher.
I think this work is invaluable and is a necessity. Every student
has the right to go to college and get an education. I am at the
school and can have a direct impact on student’s lives and careers.
How are individual students affected by this program?
Students that feel like they can't go to college can come and
meet with me and we can work together to find a college career
path that will work for them. Each student utilizes my resources
differently. Some will come and meet with me multiple times, while
others only need a quick meeting to make sure they are on the right
track.
Why should there be so much emphasis on college access and the
opportunity for higher education?
Every student has the opportunity to go to college. Some just need a
little extra push to find that path. I am happy I can be that person.
Being in the high school allows students to work with a fresh set of
eyes and someone who went through the college search process only a
few years ago.
