Why did you join the College Advising Corps? I joined the College
Advising Corps because I feel that it will be an excellent and
rewarding opportunity. Also, for my own personal growth and gaining
experience in my field. Lastly, I have a great sense of local value
in this community. Graduating from New Bedford High School, and
attending Bristol Community College before transferring to UMass
Dartmouth, my experiences have helped me associate with and
understand my students and advisees even more.
How are individual students affected by this program?
Individual
students are affected by this program because they now have someone
who is focused and committed to their needs. Guidance counselors are
surely committed to students' needs, however, they must focus on
needs other than solely on the college process at times. Students'
can benefit from the wealth of knowledge that the adviser can offer
because this helps for a smooth college process. Also, because the
adviser helps students' who don't think college is in their reach
realize that they can make it happen.
What are the benefits of creating a relationship between high
schools and college campuses/secondary schools and higher education?
The benefits of creating a relationship between high schools and
college campuses/secondary schools and higher education, is that you
establish a relationship. These relationships provide an abundance
of resources and knowledge for the adviser so that she can utilize
these resources to the best of her ability when helping students
navigate the college process.
How is your greater school community affected by this program? My
greater school community is affected deeply by this program because
amongst students, there is roughly a 76% college enrollment rate.
However, with everything that I as the adviser have to offer, I
expect that this number will rise because there is plenty of room
for it to keep rising. As well as working with the general student
population I will be targeting specifically, the night school
program, and other alternative programs in NBHS, where the thought
that students have about college being an abstract idea can be
turned into something that is entirely possible for them.
Why should there be so much emphasis on college access and the
opportunity for higher education? There should be much emphasis on
college access and the opportunity for higher education because
every student has the potential to build a foundation for his or her
future. Every student has the potential to go through college should
they apply themselves correctly once they are there, discipline
themselves. I feel that there is so much opportunity out there for
our youth that should be taken advantage of. It can be done!
