MACC has a two part application process. Submit a cover letter, résumé, and the names and contact information of four (4) references to Karen Chisholm, Director, MACC AmeriCorps*VISTA Program at karen.chisholm@tufts.edu. You'll also need to complete the online AmeriCorps application, which can be found here.

Campus Compact's Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award and Frank Newman Leadership Award
March 2008

Applications Due by March 21st!

The Swearer Award recognizes students for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to build and sustain this work among their peers and within their institution. Five awards are available to undergraduate students at Campus Compact member colleges and universities.

The Newman Award recognizes students with financial need and civic leadership potential and provides both financial support and mentorship to help them achieve their academic and civic goals. Two awards are available to undergraduate students at Campus Compact member colleges and universities.

Winning students receive a cash award to support community work as well as national recognition for their efforts. For application materials and other information, please see http://www.compact.org/awards.

AICUM (The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts) celebrated its 40th Anniversary in style with a gala at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel on Monday, December 3, 2007. This years honorees were U.S. Rep. John F. Tierney (D-Mass.), who was instrumental in the passage of the College Cost Reduction Act; Massachusetts Rep. Kevin Murphy (D-Lowell) and Sen. Robert O'Leary (D-Cape and Islands), co-chairs of Joint Committee on Higher Education; and Massachusetts Campus Compact.

Maureen Curley, President of Campus Compact said, The tribute included remarks from two students who described how their involvement in service-learning courses and leading service projects has impacted their lives. Congratulations to Barbara, the entire MACC staff, the MACC/VISTA network and the members! It was a pleasure to be able to join them at this joyous event.

2008 Raise Your Voice Presidential Civic Engagement Funds

Rhode Island and Massachusetts Campus Compacts are pleased to announce the availability of 2007-2008 Raise Your Voice Presidential Civic Engagement Funds. This fund will provide an opportunity for current member institutions in Rhode Island and Massachusetts Campus Compacts to become actively involved in promoting the engaged campus and encouraging student voice. Rhode Island and Massachusetts Campus Compacts are offering ten (10) $500 mini grants to the Presidents' Offices to encourage collaboration among campus communities around the themes of youth development and civic leadership while focusing on the role of college students in implementing change on campus and in the community.

A Study of College Student Political Engagement

You can now check out CIRCLE's new special report "Millennials Talk Politics". (Full Report & Executive Summary). "Millennials Talk Politics" is based on 47 focus groups conducted by CIRCLE on 12 college and university campuses in 2006 and 2007. CIRCLE is a national research center on the civic and political engagement of young people in the U.S. Commissioned by the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, this report is the most detailed current examination of college students political and civic attitudes and experiences. The study has compelling implications for higher education, national policymakers, and the news media, among others. The report was released last week at an event with featured speakers that included: Richard Battistoni, Professor of Political Science, Providence College; John Bridgeland, President, Civic Enterprises, LLC; Maureen Curley, President, Campus Compact; Maya Enista, Chief Operating Officer, Mobilize.org; George Mehaffy, Vice President, Academic Leadership and Change, AASCU/American Democracy Project; and Trish Tchume, Community Outreach, Idealist.org. 2007 National Campus Compact Swearer Student Humanitarian Award

The award recognizes five students each year for their outstanding public service and provides financial support toward their continued efforts to address societal needs.

A student from Emerson College, was one of the five students to win Campus Compact's coveted 2007 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award. "Stefanie Lynch has demonstrated incredible vision, leadership, and commitment to service in her three years at Emerson, and her record of achievement combined with her ability to lead and mobilize others make her an ideal candidate for this award." -- President Liebergott of Emerson College.

Ms. Lynch brings a strong commitment to all of her community efforts, whether working for the Boston Center for Youth and Families, acting as community outreach coordinator for an on-campus group, planning workshops for students to learn skills for making social change, assisting with Emerson Action day, or serving as a Resident Advisor. Ms. Lynch believes passionately in the mutual empowerment possible when people work together and in the potential of positive change. Ms. Lynch has been singled out as having "incredible vision, leadership, and commitment to service," as well as for her record of achievement and ability to lead and mobilize others.
