Harream Purdie
Student Bridges Program
UMass Amherst

Education: BA, English, Morehouse College, 2006, MS, Labor Studies, University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2008

Why did you join MACC VISTA: I joined MACC to be a part of something great. For me, college was a life changing experience where I learned so much about myself and about the world. My college experience inspired me to work toward making the world a better place to live. VISTA's commitment to limiting the effects of poverty was what attracted me to the program, plus the opportunity to continue the good work happening at the UMass, Amherst Student Bridges Program.

Why should higher ed institutions have a commitment to access to higher ed? One of the many causes of poverty is education, particularly access to education. If institutions of higher education believe that education is a right, than they should commit to insure that all students have equal access to education. By committing to making education more accessible, colleges and universities are helping to alleviate one of the many causes of poverty.
