9:00 - 9:15 Welcome
9:15 - 11:30 Connecting to Themes
How does your textbook characterize the period we are examining? How does your community's experience during this period compare to the textbook's description of the national experience? How are they different? What might explain this difference? How could you write one sentence that summarizes your findings in a way that is interesting to people outside your community? If you sent this sentence to the author of your textbook, where in the text would you suggest it be included?
Model: Rob McGreevey models how to connect a source to themes.
Practice: Participants work in town-specific groups to connect sources to themes.
Discussion: Groups share connections with each other.
11:30 - 12:15 Lunch
12:15 - 1:45 Talking Back to the Textbook
Panel Discussion with Jacqueline Jones and Co-authors of the textbook Created Equal.
Participants present their sentences to textbook authors. Panel discusses what makes for a good sentence and their criteria for publication.
1:45 - 3:00 Closing Discussion: How could we replicate this process with other primary sources: images, monuments, newspapers, maps, court cases, etc.
