Peer led study groups are the educational foundation of Osher LLI and active learning is its
central principle. Tufts University Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute offers a wide variety of program formats
including: (i) eight-week study groups in fall and spring terms; (ii) four-session study
groups in winter and summer terms; (iii) e-learning study groups; (iv) a Lunch and
Learn series at no added cost concurrent with the fall and spring terms; (v) special events;
and (vi) an affiliation with Brookhaven-at-Lexington, a local retirement community.

Study Group Format
Eight-Week Study Groups: Fall and Spring
The Eight-Week Study Group is the core format. Each study group meets for two hours
either in the morning or the afternoon. Classes are held Monday or Friday on the Medford
campus or Wednesday on the Brookhaven-at-Lexington campus.
Four-Session Study Groups: Summer and Winter
The summer term runs for four consecutive days and the winter term meets once a week
for 4 weeks. These four-session terms provide a vehicle for members whose time limitations
or travel plans prevent participation in eight-week courses or, conversely, to accommodate
those wanting to continue study group activity beyond the fall and spring eight-week terms.
E-Learning
E-learning courses allow you to enjoy the intellectual life of Tufts
without leaving your home or office. Online learning makes it
possible to have a rich and diverse virtual classroom with students
as near as Medford and as far away as Shanghai China, Bombay India
and Australia. Besides the obvious draws of online learning – the
convenience of attending class anytime and anywhere; opening the
classroom to those with limited mobility; those who are homebound or
otherwise cannot come to campus; the accessibility of a diverse
student population spanning all time zones and geographic distances;
the innovative application of the technology and software encourage
mature learners to take risks and explore new grounds. For those who
have not taken a class in sometime, a virtual course may be the only
way to return to the classroom comfortably.
