Enrollment & Membership Information: Committees
We are a self-governing program run through a committee structure. Each committee has specific
duties and responsibilities. A brief description of each committee follows.
Executive Board
The Executive Board is the principal governing body and shall have primary responsibility for
formulating and implementing Institute policies. These policies shall conform to the Bylaws then
in effect and with University policies and regulations. The Executive Board shall be responsible
for oversight of all standing and ad hoc committees. It shall appoint the members of all standing
and ad hoc committees except as noted elsewhere in the Bylaws. It will be responsible for setting
membership fees and study group tuition levels and for approving the Institute's annual budget.
Communications Committee
The Communications Committee shall keep the Institute's membership appraised of Institute-specific,
University, and relevant community activities through bulletin boards, letters, additions to the
Institute's website and other appropriate means. It shall assist the Editor in the compilation
and distribution to all members of a periodic newsletter.
Spotlight Committee
The Spotlight Committee is a sub-committee of the Communications Committee. The Spotlight
Committee shall compile a journal of commendable works completed by any member to be published annually.
Curriculum Committee
The Curriculum Committee shall be responsible for developing the selection of study groups to
be offered during each program period. It shall be responsible for recruiting and training new
Study Group Leaders (SGLs) and for maintaining contact with continuing SGLs. It shall ensure
that both Study Groups and SGLs are evaluated regularly both by participants in each study group
and by members of the Curriculum Committee.
Development Committee
The Development Committee shall make
proposals to the Executive Board and implement plans for the
development and acquisition of additional financial resources to
support the Institutes programs and facilities.
Edventures Committee
The Edventures Committee develops exciting social and recreational activities so that our members
can enjoy one another's company outside of the classroom environment at no cost.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee shall (i) in cooperation with the Director, develop for review and approval
by the Executive Board a proposed operating budget for the coming fiscal year.and (ii) monitor
performance against the approved budget. It shall make recommendations to the Executive Board
regarding the amounts to be charged for membership and for study group tuition. The Committee
shall explore methods and make proposals to the Executive Board for the development and
acquisition of additional financial resources to support the Institute's programs and facilities.
Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee shall plan and present various social and culinary functions designed
to create a friendly and inclusive environment for Institute members. These functions may include
morning refreshments, lunches, receptions, and other formats as deemed appropriate.
Lunch and Learn
The Lunch and Learn Committee shall be responsible for planning and managing the educational
content of the Lunch and Learn series including recruiting presenters and publishing a schedule
of topics at the beginning of each program period.
Marketing Committee
The Marketing Committee shall develop means for publicizing and promoting the Institute and
its programs to potential users within and outside the Tufts University community.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee shall assist the Director, the Executive Board, and other Institute
committees on matters regarding the development and retention of the Institute's membership.
This will include (i) formulating standards for admission and for member conduct and promulgating
these standards through handbooks and other means, (ii) in conjunction with the Director, developing
information on the demographics, preferences, and concerns of Institute members using written
surveys, focus groups, and such other channels as may be suitable, and (iii) when necessary,
functioning as an admissions committee.
Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee shall, at each Annual Meeting of the membership, present a slate of
candidates for Chair and Vice-Chair of the Executive Board, At-Large members of the Executive
Board, and members of the Nominating Committee as required by the expiration of the terms of
those currently holding these positions. Alternate nominations to those presented by the Nominating
Committee shall be accepted from the floor.
Committee's Meeting Schedule
Curriculum Committee meets the 2nd Thursday of each month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Executive
Board meets the 3rd Thursday of each month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
All other committee
meetings are determined by committees and chair. Members are informed meeting times via e-mail. All
committee meeting take place at the Tufts University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute office 039 Carmichael Hall Medford, MA 02155.
