About Us
The number of Americans reaching "seasoned citizen" status has increased
dramatically the past several years. As a matter of fact, research noted that when these
"seasoned citizens" had more time, they became involved in a myriad of
life-enhancing, enrichment experiences, including further education. In the fall of 2000,
in response to research demonstrating the value of education beyond the traditional
framework of school, college and university, Tufts University, champions of lifelong
learning and community relations, established a lifelong learning program called the
Tufts Institute for Learning in Retirement (TILR). In 2003, to reflect the institute's
interest in participants near retirement, as well as those already retired, the name
was changed to the Tufts Institute for Lifelong Learning (TILL). The program has drawn
hundreds of "seasoned citizens" from the surrounding communities to the
Medford campus. These people sought intellectual challenge and came with vast accumulated
knowledge willing to impart to their peers, constituting a ready-made "faculty."
In 2005, following receipt of a naming grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, the
Institute became the Tufts University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The Institute
is supported by Tufts University and the Tufts University Alumni Association and continues
to offer a peer learning experience for those with a vigorous interest in the world of ideas
who wish to continue their odyssey of lifelong learning. Welcome one and all.
